The thing at the lake was really the turning point for Kuzuryuu because like...while Wriggle was the one who actually commented on the fact that Kuzuryuu could be mellow when he wanted to, Kuzuryuu was more or less thinking the same thing. Because that was really the first time he'd seen Wriggle as something other than an obnoxious brat. And honestly, he felt kind of sorry for her? Especially her reason for not bothering to remember anybody's names, that really just made him kind of sad. Because he'd honestly thought it was a mental deficiency on her part, but really it was more like a coping mechanism than anything? He almost would have preferred that she just couldn't remember her names because her memory was that bad as opposed to her not bothering so she wouldn't be hurt by their deaths. So that was the point where he tried to start being nicer to her. He still thought she was a brat, but obviously not as bad a brat as he'd first assumed.
He felt bad for her again when she started talking to him about how the game was so clearly stacked in the favor of people like himself. People who were fairly smart and capable of solving murders. And while he didn't think Wriggle was necessarily completely stupid, he had to agree that she wasn't cut out for this game in a completely different way than he was. Because he just wasn't cut out for murder part of murder mystery. He was fairly good at the mystery part though! She, on the other hand, was more cut out for murder part, but wasn't cut out at all for the mystery half. Which...in this case is the more important half. Because it's not just about killing somebody, it's about killing somebody cleverly and being able to cover it up so somebody else takes the fall. And he was positive that if Wriggle ever killed anybody, they'd probably figure it out immediately. So she was just kind of double-boned. The only explanation he had for why they'd picked her was for for pure entertainment value, which was really kind of fucked up. Because given how messed up the producers are, he equated that to her more or less being comic relief until the audience got bored of her and she died. And that is a really shitty thing to do to a person. So HE REALLY WANTED TO SEE HER MAKE IT TO THE END. Like...there were a lot of people he wanted to survive because he liked them. But Wriggle he both liked and wanted to see defy expectations. Protect Wriggle 2k14.
When Seabass and Apollo revealed the DKs, weirdly enough Wriggle was like...the one non-DK that Kuzuryuu felt wouldn't turn on him. He was REALLY worried about what people like Maribelle and Glinda would think but since Wriggle has..I'm going to say greyer morals but I'm not sure if that's really the word I'm looking for here. But her whole "all of us are killers" and just her murder standard in general led him to believe that he had very little to worry about as far as her opinion of him went. He honestly didn't think she'd even be all that surprised, given how suspicious she'd been of him from the start. OBVIOUSLY THOUGH he couldn't tell her anything? Because admitting to being a DK was against the rules, he wasn't allowed to confirm the existence of the group or his involvement in it. But she KEPT TRYING TO PUSH HIM ABOUT THE MASTERMIND and all he could really do was skirt around the issue and deny being involved. Which he wasn't entirely sure she was buying but what can you do?
Fast forward a bit to Austria's trial. When he went with Wriggle to search Austria's room, it actually had nothing to do with making sure she did "proper job," despite what he said. What he REALLY wanted to do was help her feel useful and clear Austria's name. Because he REALLY didn't want it to be Austria, but...he had a feeling the moment he saw the suspect list that it was, given a conversation he'd had with her a few days prior. Which was ALMOST why he told Wriggle to leave the dress behind when they found it. But he couldn't do that because he was pretty sure that it WAS relevant, somehow. BUT HE WAS REALLY CONFLICTED ON THAT WHOLE THING. NO JOKE I REWROTE THAT TAG AT LEAST THREE TIMES BECAUSE HE COULDN'T DECIDE WHAT TO DO. He was struggling between his whole "WRITE NOTHING OFF" thing and "I really don't want Austria to have done this". In the end though, obviously it was Austria and you have no idea how bad Kuzuryuu felt about that. Because since she did it to help him and the other DKs, that sort of made him indirectly responsible for her dying. Meaning Wriggle being upset was partially his fault in a roundabout way. Not entirely, but...he was tied into it. Which was why he was all too happy to let Athena deal with her after Austria revealed she was going to blow herself up. Or well...not HAPPY but he had no idea how to handle that situation.
Then he hatched his plan to wreck the game and honestly Wriggle was the non-DK he felt the most apologetic towards. Because, while he knew he couldn't hold a candle to Austria, as far as he could tell, he and Athena were the two Wriggle liked most. And he felt like they'd really gotten close recently and here he was, basically planning is own death not even a week after Austria's. Were it not for the fact that they both wound up on the immune list and the prize was THAT QUESTION, Kuzuryuu probably would have tried to keep his distance that week. But he couldn't just...sit there and let her deal with that alone. Because even though he already had all the information he needed and the question was basically useless to him, it was still stressing him out. Because he couldn't tell people about the note he'd received, so he had to ask something that made it look like he was trying to help but not something that would reveal his plan too early or mess it up in any way. Because obviously people were going to want to know what he asked. So he knew Wriggle was just as stressed as he was, if not moreso because she had no idea that the questions were ultimately pointless. And she'd already said how many times that she wasn't smart enough for this game? So obviously she was going to be feeling a lot of pressure and he felt like he was really the only one who could help her with that, since he was in a similar position.
I think the easiest way to sum up their CR from Kuzuryuu's perspective is that it was "two months worth of Wriggle lightly kicking at Kuzuryuu's big brother complex before just straight up K.O.ing him with it." That conversation at the ball being the K.O. point. He wasn't joking when he said she reminded him of his sister in a way or playing it up or anything, but i guess to clarify it was more like "you remind me of her when she was your age". THEY WEREN'T EXACTLY THE SAME BUT...there were definitely some qualities in Wriggle that he saw in both himself and his sister and that was a big part of what inevitably endeared her to him. But like I've said, his motivations for that whole thing were to both prevent Wriggle from asking something that would interfere with his plan, and to try and make her feel less stressed. He didn't go into it expecting to convince her to ask about the dead players? Honestly, he thought they were dead for good. But then again, he wasn't the one who asked the host what happens to them. Which he thought was actually really impressive on Wriggle's part! Like as much as she said she wasn't very smart, she was the only one who thought to ask something like that? The rest of them were too concerned with the living to spare any serious thought on what happens to the people who died. So he immediately started trying to push her towards that when she brought it up and gave her reasoning for why she thought there was a chance. Because not only was it what she wanted to ask, but if she WAS right, then there was all the proof she needed that she genuinely WAS helpful. Because there was something she came up with all on her own. And it was also something that he didn't have the answer to. So it was a win-win teamwork sort of deal, he'd handle the safety of the living players and Wriggle could handle the dead ones.
All that being said, he did go to his execution fully expecting to die for real. He had no illusions about that part, but he did die with the hope that they would be able to do something to bring him back. Because, if nothing else, he genuinely believed in Wriggle. And if they couldn't, well that sucks but he was okay with that too. Because he died to protect the people he cared about, EVEN IF HE FELT REALLY BAD ABOUT DOING SO, HOLY SHIT. He wholly expected her to beat the ever loving shit out of him at his trial, so he was not surprised by her reaction to seeing him in the graveyard at all. It was just kinda like "ah yes, there's the Nightbug I know. Ow."
As far as things go now, Wriggle is one of the people he'll miss the most when they finally figure out how to go back home and everyone has to part ways. He wishes he could adopt you and take you home with him but his homeworld is absolute shit HAHAHA... So she's like spiritual little sister or something. THAT DOESN'T CHANGE JUST BECAUSE HIS SISTER BY BLOOD IS ALIVE AGAIN. HE CAN HAVE AS MANY SPIRITUAL LITTLE SISTERS AS HE WANTS. So he'll probably try and keep an eye on her and make sure she doesn't get into too much trouble. Because obviously she can take care of herself and doesn't need protecting but SHE IS A LOOSE CANON SOMETIMES AND IT'S GOOD TO HAVE A FEW PEOPLE THERE TO REIGN THOSE IN. At least a little bit. Not too much though. You wreck as much shit as you want Wriggle, just make sure it's done constructively, y'hear???
