Oh Cowru...what do we say about you, really? Kuzuryuu never actually hated him (obligatory disclaimer of the first few weeks where he hated everyone goes here) but he was never really quite sure what to think of him either. So Kaoru kind of occupies a very unique place in Kuzuryuu's CR. Okay so, obviously you already know that Kaoru hecked up big time with Kuzuryuu fairly early on. Because literally NOBODY gets that self-depreciating to make a stranger that they don't even know feel better. Like if he had just left it at the initial thanks, he would have been fine for a while. Perhaps even the whole game? But no. He just had to keep going, which set off all kinds of alarm bells in Kuzuryuu's head because he is not a trusting creature by default. AND RIGHTFULLY SO, LOOKING AT HIS BACKGROUND. It's really no wonder his trust levels are basically in the negatives by default. Not only that though, but his reaction to even being on the suspect list at all had Kuzuryuu quirking a brow as well. Because it was more like how he would have reacted. Minus the whole "I'M USED TO BEING SUSPECTED!!!" bullshit that Kuzuryuu pulls. It wasn't enough to really set off alarm bells, but he did think it was kind of weird that he was so chill about it. And that he could so easily deflect suspicion off of him. IT JUST DIDN'T SIT WELL WITH KUZURYUU. Because he had no reason to believe that Kaoru was USED to something like this. So while he didn't expect him to react like, say, Glinda did, he did not expect what actually happened. So that just sat a little weird with him AND THEN THAT SHIT IN THE DUNGEON JUST KIND OF CONFIRMED HIS SUSPICIONS THAT THERE WAS MORE TO KAORU THAN HE WAS LETTING ON. And he was right... Just not in the way he expected!

If there is one thing he trusts though, weirdly enough, it's rules. Which is why he was pushing Kaoru so hard in the trial. Obviously, he was 100% certain that neither Peko nor Chizuru had done the thing. The former because he was with her for the entire duration of the murder taking place, and the latter because they were both DKs. If she'd done it, he was fairly certain he would have known because of how Nanami had set them up to be a team. So Chizuru SURELY would have told at least Nanami that she'd done it so she could have back up. Which just left...Glinda, Kougyoku, and Kaoru. Kougyoku's alibi was as airtight as Peko's was AND HE DIDN'T THINK SHE WOULD KILL WHAT WAS VERY LIKELY HER BROTHER ANYWAY? Family bias. For a while he thought it might have been Glinda and that she was just a very good actress but it was less of a stretch to think Kaoru did it. Glinda had time she was unaccounted for but not NEARLY as much as Kaoru did and his abilities were just better suited for this. SO HE WAS CONVINCED THAT IT WAS KAORU AND HE WAS JUST PLAYING EVERYBODY? Which...again, he...wasn't entirely wrong on either count.

But that wasn't enough for him to really call Kaoru's game definitively. It was enough to make him suspicious, but he had no earthly idea what Kaoru's actual angle was. So he just classified him as "dangerous for reasons unknown" and made sure that his people knew about that. Because if Kaoru really was a secret murdery type that...wasn't wholly a bad thing, so long as he DIDN'T kill any of the DKs. Because they needed people other than DKs to murder as well, otherwise they'd have to go multiple times and that was REALLY RISKY. So he just...decided to keep an eye on Kaoru and see if he could figure out what his game was, but other than that he was content to just...let him do his thing. He never had any intention of murdering him (even without Chizuru asking the DKs not to) because HE WAS FAIRLY POSITIVE HE COULD NOT HAVE PULLED THAT OFF, but he would have been 100% okay with scapegoating him. At least in the beginning when he was still an overconfident little jackass who was trying to act the proper part of a DK and actually thought he could scapegoat somebody.

Kaoru was actually pretty good at saving face though? Because he never did anything else to further tip Kuzuryuu's suspicions. For a while there, he honestly wondered if maybe he was just looking into it too deeply and seeing things that weren't there? But he never wrote off his suspicions completely because Kuzuryuu trusts his instincts. So clearly it wasn't him, it's just that Kaoru was a better actor than he gave him credit for. But all in all, he was actually pretty neutral on Kaoru as far as liking him went for a majority of the game. he never gave Kuzuryuu a reason to hate him, but he never gave him a reason to like him either. And he didn't trust him as far as he could throw him. KAORU WAS ACTUALLY THE PERSON HE TRUSTED THE LEAST, IN ALL HONESTY. He was not going to go anywhere with him alone or confide any secrets in him or anything like that. Which...was what he TRIED to convince Chizuru to do but obviously that did not work in the slightest. But an attempt sure was made. Repeatedly.

AND THEN CHIZURU SPILLED DK SECRETS TO KAORU AND YOU HAVE NO FUCKING CLUE HOW PISSED OFF KUZURYUU WAS ABOUT THAT. Because that was just...no. It's another thing that if he HADN'T been yakuza, he probably would not have felt quite so strongly about. But alas, he is, and he was 100% ready to just let them scapegoat Chizuru because he saw her as a backstabbing liability. OBVIOUSLY HE CALMED DOWN LATER AND REALIZED HE OVERREACTED AND HE WAS GLAD HE DIDN'T LET THEM KILL HER BUT...jfc. That whole thing. Curse you, Kaoru. Somehow that was partially your fault. IF NOTHING ELSE, YOU WERE THE ONE WHO BROUGHT IT UP AND NEARLY PUT KUZURYUU IN A VERY BAD AND AWKWARD POSITION. Which...was probably Kaoru's intent all along, now that I think about it... /laughs hollowly into the night But yeah, he was almost just as mad as Kaoru as he was at Chizuru for that and it took all of his self restraint and probably literally biting his tongue not to lose his temper at the both of them in the middle of that trial. Because that would have exposed the DKs for sure.

Then he...had to kill Chizuru. HAHA. WHICH, AS IF HE DIDN'T FEEL BAD ENOUGH ABOUT ALREADY...he was 100% convinced that Kaoru and Chizuru were siblings BECAUSE REALLY. LOOK AT THEM. CHIZURU, YOU ARE SLIGHTLY DENSE TO KEEP DENYING THAT. And obviously, even not remembering that his own sister was dead, he has strong feelings about killng siblings and family bonds and blah blah blah. So that was partially why he ended up writing a letter to Kaoru. He hadn't initially intended to write letters at all BUT HE ALSO WAS COUNTING ON YOU LOSERS FIGURING HIM OUT A LOT SOONER THAN YOU DID. Like he was worried they'd almost figure it out too fast when they started talking about how the notes could have been left on day one. So yeah, he fully expected to have enough time to say everything he wanted to before his execution so there was no need for letters. BUT SOME OF THEM WERE REALLY CONVINCED THAT HE DIDN'T DO IT. So letters it was. Which...in retrospect he ended up feeling silly about because THE ENTIRE LATTER HALF OF THE LETTER ENDED UP BEING COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY. But Kuzuryuu had no way of knowing that until after he died. It's kind of funny because His trust levels in Kaoru just spiked after he decided to do the thing. AFTER GOING THROUGH THE WHOLE GAME WITH A NEGATIVE TRUST FACTOR, taking out the DKs was finally what switched Kuzuryuu over to team I Believe In Kaoru Nagumo. Because over the course of the trial it became apparent to Kuzuryuu that he and Kaoru were birds of a feather when it came to refusing to sit down and play nice when they were told to. And wanting to wreck people's shit. So that was really what he trusted, Kaoru's rebellious spirit that clearly refused to take shit from any man. SO DESPITE THE FACT THAT HE STILL FELT THAT KAORU WAS PROBABLY A LOT MORE DANGEROUS THAN HE WANTED EVERYONE TO BELIEVE, he had no problems with leaving things in his hands. Because dangerous is a good thing if it's pointed at a common enemy.

Then w9 happened and Kuzuryuu was 100% positive Kaoru was the "True Mastermind" the minute he saw those clues. Especially Maribelle's it was just kinda like GEE. I WONDER WHAT THE ONE MURDER THEY DIDN'T APPROVE OF WAS? It was Chizuru, wasn't it? Yeah. Yeah it was. So like...for a minute there he was just like "...did I seriously write a ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWER letter to a guy who's been working with the producers the whole time?" He didn't want to think that was the case but he couldn't really shake the worry that that was exactly what happened. Because he's a pessimist. SO SUFFICE IT TO SAY HE WAS REALLY CONFUSED FOR A GOOD PORTION OF THAT TRIAL. Had Kaoru been in a situation like Nanami the whole time and decided to go against the people trying to control him and they'd caught wind of it? Was the True Mastermind thing a lie, meaning he was being 100% set up? Or had he been completely mistaken about Kaoru after all and he was going along with the Producer's script? He found this last one to be the least likely because, again, HE BELIEVED IN KAORU NAGUMO. It wasn't until he actually started talking it out with Chizuru and Kanaya said her piece that it clicked that Kaoru was s47's inside man. Which probably meant that he still had his memories somehow but he wasn't positive of that until Kaoru himself confirmed it. SO HE WAS VERY RELIEVED BY THE TIME THAT TRIAL CAME TO AN END, between Kaoru and Gundam. Though he felt very silly about his letter because god, Fuyuhiko, did you really write a row row fight the powah letter to a guy who was on team row row fight the powah from the very beginning? You sure did. You idiot.

Which was why he wasn't exactly sure what to say to Kaoru at first when he finally wound up in the graveyard too. Just...wow. He was right about so many things but also wrong about so many things and THIS WAS SLIGHTLY AWKWARD. But it ended up being okay and apparently he managed to turn Kaoru's opinion of him around somewhat with that. HE REALLY IS GENUINELY SORRY THAT HE KILLED YOUR SISTER, MAN, EVEN IF IT WASN'T FOR REALSIES. Especially now that he has his memories back, he knows how much that completely and utterly sucks. But he's actually looking forward to working with Kaoru from here on out! Because he is a ~kindred spirit~ as far as marching to the beat of your own drum goes. Also they're both shitheads and Kuzuryuu gets along well with other shitheads for whatever reason. I'm hesitant to say that he'd call Kaoru a friend persay? It would really depend on their interaction from here on out. It's not impossible but Kaoru is in the weird position of being more an s47er than an s50er and that kind of sets him apart in Kuzuryuu's mind? Like not in a bad way just...IT'S DIFFERENT. I'M NOT REALLY SURE HOW TO PUT IT but since Kaoru retained his memories the whole time, he's fundamentally different than Spain and Rin. So I think in a way he kind of feels like there's something there that he can't intrude on? Idk Kuzuryuu is just weird. HE'S NOT OPPOSED TO FRIENDSHIP WITH KAORU, HE'S JUST WEIRD ABOUT IT. FOR REASONS THAT MAKE SENSE TO HIM BUT NOBODY ELSE. But he does hold Kaoru in pretty high regard and respect him after all this, and he definitely considers him a comrade! So there's that at least.

IM CRACKING UP OVER THIS WHOLE THING oh no kazoo... i love how they were just totally misreading each other the entire game and then randomly came to an understanding, bless. also yeah kaoru totally brought up that loophole on purpose in an attempt to out the DKs... since he already knew about it before they did and would have pretended to figure it out for himself if he didnt want chizuru to get in trouble BUT HE WAS AIMING FOR DESTRUCTION. what a shithead. i think athena actually had a moment in the lawyers+sebastian meeting later that week where she realized he brought it up like that on purpose and she was like "h...uh......." LMFAO.

THAT SAID kaoru is actually capable of making friends now thanks to his three years of crazy rebel friendship camaraderie, and he also feels like he's pretty much on the same page as kazoo! especially re: sticking it to the man... so being friends eventually will probably happen just u wait kazoo the murder friendship train is coming

OH BOY MURDER FRIENDSHIP. THE BEST KIND. No, really, it is I swear to god Kuzuryuu is incapable of making friends unless it's in a murder game THAT IS SOMETHING THISGAME HAS PROVEN TO ME. HE GOT MORE FRIENDS OUT OF THIS GAME IN TWO MONTHS THAN HE HAS IN ROUTE IN OVER HALF A YEAR IT'S RIDICULOUS??? They can bond over genocide
