Basically Kaoru just ended up on the wrong?? end of Austria's temper/patience/sanity for the first half of the game.
Austria isn't a morning person in the slightest. Like she's barely even functional so waking up in some weird ass house with some weird ass layout and bumping into some weird punk ass dude was like sensory overload-- SO NATURALLY SHE SMACKED THE SHIT OUT OF HIM WHEN THEY FIRST MET and then ollied out like some crazy loon.
But that was actually embarrassing as all hell when she was functional and competent. So naturally when she saw Kaoru again she decided their first meeting-- never happened. She will never acknowledge it occurred you could show her a video tape of that episode and she would deny it's existence right in front of her face it never happened-- it never happened Kaoru.
When the first trial rolled around she tried to be pretty pragmatic initially, but eventually it seemed reasonable to her that Kaoru was the one who most likely did the thing SHE JUST COULDN'T PROVE IT. And it drove her to a colossal break down about tumblers and chloroform and basically she was a crazy ranting woman who knew she was right somehow-- and then marlowe was acting hella shady and fuck it Austria didn't like that bitch anyways so when the opportunity to lynch that her arrived WHY NOT. if they can't find the evidence for Kaoru then she probably did it, why not.
apparently not.At that point she really did re-evaluate her relationship with Kaoru. And she realized well. Maybe I am being... unfair to him. Somehow. Although it is weird that it is just him I am unfair to it is like he is bringing this on himself-- CLEARLY AUSTRIA SHOULD HAVE NOT IGNORED THAT IN FAVOR OF BEING POLITE BECAUSE KAORU WAS IN FACT A LITTLE SHIT. but i digress.
So she tried to cut him more slack. Consciously. And then he wanted piano lessons anyways so attempting to be nicer to him wasn't that hard when she had a completely legitimate reason and scheduled time slot each week to hurl verbal abuse at him!!
But Austria found Kaoru's waffling and insecurity and mildness actually pretty annoying and frustrating but Kaoru was helpful in trials so at least he had that going for him. So when he opted to learn piano she wanted to make him more confident! For his piano playing sake and just to make him less annoying to her in general actually.
At that point she realized that Kaoru took all her yelling and demands for perfection unreasonably well for someone who was so... mild-- like she's sure Bakura would have cried like in the first five minutes of her calling his fingers bratwursts but Kaoru just took everything in stride. Which she thought was kind of weird but not completely unheard of because she generally has that effect on some men. But then it just made her kind of curious as to what would actually get to him so she got more and more bold with her critiques of him BUT SHE STILL COULDN'T GET ANYTHING OUT OF HIM.
The week four private conversation in the trial really agitated her more than she was letting on, but Sebastian was more obnoxious about it and less helpful than Kaoru was so while she couldn't stand the two of them for being so spineless she could still tolerate Kaoru more. Like seriously you're two grown ass men who can CLEARLY hold their own and you're scared of a thirteen year old? What the hell is the matter with you???
As a result she took the firing squad for their ridiculous secretiveness because she is not a complete wuss. She was not... anticipating the wrath of Glinda... however... ha ha. She took a serious hit emotionally for you cold hearted twerps.
Also she felt like her babysitting responsibilities when it came to Spain's dumbassery multiplied exponentially somehow. Because Kaoru was in it for himself basically, but Spain was still like my friends! my friends! you saved me-- no. Kaoru's a shit SPAIN DON'T TRUST HIM. That's what she got out of their conversation. Which... you know. Being a shit in a murder game fine whatever. Survival of the fittest she guesses. But this isn't someone you want to befriend Spain, he's a little shit who will throw you under the bus if it's convenient to spare himself any hand dirtying.
She really resented the calling attention to her immunity thing. Because Austria didn't like being rewarded for basically nailing Bakura to the wall and she really did think Kaoru and Sebastian were pretty disgusting behavior wise in that trial. To her it was like hey look what you got for spain being incompetent and hey look at what you got for Kaoru and Sebastian being trash-- IMMUNITY. Wait till Glinda shows up to rip you apart for it.
So when he suggested piano lessons she was like hell yes lets get the fuck out of here-- but then she started second guessing herself as being too hard on Kaoru again. And chalked his silence up to maybe more of a confidence problem??
Basically Austria went through a process of not liking Kaoru, not being able to rationalize why she did not like Kaoru eloquently enough even for herself and then dialing back the resentment.... For the most part things skated along like that for a while. She put down his name for trivia as the mastermind not really because she suspected him it was more like... morbid curiosity. Basically she knew something was up with that twerp that made him different from Sebastian (who it was really easy to understand why she hated his guts) she just couldn't figure out what it was.
So when Nanami (the actual mastermind lol) was like yeah Kaoru's shady-- Austria was like yeaaaaah. I tried to ignore it and be polite with him but... I can't figure out why.... but I know. I know.
At the end of week six Austria was unraveling entirely so when Sebastian's report came out she was like HA HA HA... She wasn't sure how involved Kaoru was in the actual reveal of that list but she figured he probably had some hand in at least helping Sebastian compile it. Which sort of pissed her off in another way because Kaoru and Chizuru seemed so tight knit-- and to her it was pretty obvious they were siblings. And he was setting her up to die-- unless he really believed a no kill week would work. SO. Austria... cut him slack again... thinking well that must be it...
So when she cornered him in the music room and was talking about what happy occasions "graduations" (bitty dk's) and "weddings" (the single grown ass adult chizuru) and how it would be nice if everyone got to live and do you really think a no kill week will work?? It was a make or break moment really for her--
So when he gave her the same placid pleasant kaoru-ness he always gave her... she sort of just gave up... entirely on him. She gave up on a no kill week. She gave up on inaction and sitting quietly by waiting and hoping that something would save them-- or hoping that someone else would die/kill so they could live.
AND SHE TOOK THINGS INTO HER OWN HANDS AND AUSTRIA KILLED SPAIN-- to get the grenade and spare maribelle. (otherwise she could have probably finagled something to kill sebastian somehow she's a creative woman IT WOULD HAVE BEEN REALLY HARD THOUGH and also super obvious) and you know she probably could have asked Spain. It just never occurred to her to ask because... no sane person dies for another person. To her love is living for someone-- also she didn't think Spain really loved her anyways because of the things Iceland told her about nations. No one gives a shit about two nations who don't want to be nations anyways. (But apparently Spain was the SPECIAL nation who was kaoru's and stiles bffl
also no one knew about what spain had done to her that got her to this pointthus the worst person ever to target apparently)When Kaoru read Spain's note in trial and seemed to emote... Austria was just kind of like. Well. Maybe there is hope for Kaoru after all. Maybe something like this will finally get him out of his placid pleasantness and he'll actually do something now.
She wasn't expecting Sebastian to get knocked out of the suspect pool so early. She knew about him not being able to lie from when he specifically told her in the week four conversation I CAN NOT LIE and then he said it again at the report reveal so she didn't discount it-- it wasn't on his card though and when has the host ever been amenable enough to add something entirely game changing like that??
HA HA HA.But she thought he'd made himself enough of an intolerable little shit who was content with letting the game roll on it's intended course that she'd be able to frame him regardless-- she didn't think she could convince the lawyers of anything but everyone else in the house definitely liked her enough and he'd just antagonized four people who had their backs against the wall. So the plan was cast enough doubt on him to make it look like it was him, test the cake with the sabotaged poison kit and watch him squirm under BUT I CAN'T LIE as his defense and roll on by on her alliances.
then blow up that door and face the consequences anywaysShe interpreted the host accepting his request to add "cannot lie" to his card as case sabotage on the part of the producers though-- like Sebastian was their best chance of getting the game to finish out as it was intended because he is such a pompous dingus.
apparently it was just stiles and kaoru being hella bitter. But she had this poisoned poison kit floating out in the ether like... shit. Fuck. I can easily frame someone else flawlessly but. I don't want to frame anyone else. I only wanted him because he's furthering the game and has lived for literal centuries!! So when Kaoru was like is Sebastian even an actual suspect anymore??? And she was like... we can rule him out-- she was pretty sure Kaoru knew exactly who'd done it by his reaction to her response. She spent most of the trial from that point giving answers that were true and also... pretty pressable if you were looking and trying to guide people off the wrong tracks while Kaoru was like THERE'S A 45 MINUTE GAP IN AUSTRIA'S ALIBI YOU GUYS. GUYS!!
She was incredibly impressed with how many people were willing to ignore that lmfao-- SEBASTIAN YOU WOULD HAVE BEEN SO BONED OKAY.
So when everyone turned on Iceland she confessed. And she figured everyone was gonna hate her guts-- especially Kaoru from that note reaction. But hey in her mind... at least she did something so whatever.
LITTLE DID SHE KNOW KAORU WAS THE MOLE ALL ALONG. THE HOST WAS IN ON IT. YOU KNEW THE WHOLE TIME. YOU KNEW EVERYTHING. YOU DID ALL THOSE AWFUL THINGS YOU LED THAT IDIOT SEBASTIAN AROUND ON A LEASH. YOU KNEW THAT GROUP WAS COERCED INTO KILLING AND YOU TRIED TO RALLY EVERYONE AGAINST THEM-- YOUR OWN SISTER.
And suddenly all those times Austria quelled her undefined odd internal hatred for Kaoru came back full force now with a purpose and she absolutely loathed his existence. Like she could understand being the mole, she could understand using people, she could understand the goal of doing what is necessary to break the game but she didn't have to like him for it or the way he went about it-- much like he didn't have to like her or how she'd tried to go about it.
Stiles dying compounded that by then further placing Kaoru and himself (and Gundam by just association-- actually she'd probably love Gundam if the mole meetings were aired tbh he was the best of the three) on a pedestal and their suffering above the suffering of those who had no power in this situation at all. Especially the line about Kaoru having to watch his sister die-- that one just made her snap entirely because Kaoru in her mind had done absolutely nothing to help Chizuru's situation.
NOTHING. If anything he'd furthered it by fueling on Sebastian.
But then she was like well if we all die we get saved anyways if their plan goes forward-- but then she didn't get why people in mm cared so much about Spain then and why Spain was suddenly more important to keep around than Maribelle?? Like there were so many glaring contradictions in the way she was perceiving Kaoru and Stiles' anger and approach towards the game she just ended up getting more frustrated.
The hypocrisy was so great she couldn't stand it. Being vilified by Stiles for what she'd done is one thing she could understand but Stiles then placing himself and Kaoru as the saviors of Craven Castle after everything they had done just made her snap entirely-- so she strangled Stiles until Spain pulled her off him but had no outlet for her rage against the Kaoru machine so that just festered and festered until HIS STUPID ASS FACE SHOWED UP FINALLY.
And then he copped an attitude immediately and she was so angry she actually ascended into a place of anger that is so placid and lukewarm it is probably what being Kaoru's fake persona feels like if that was a literal state of being. Like Kaoru was so completely dead to her in that moment even though he was living and breathing and standing right there.
So she said nothing and walked away and she would have been so content to just leave it like that and go home and never think about Kaoru fucking Nagumo or any of his disgusting friends ever again. But then she got stuck in his base camp as opposed to going home and they crossed paths at her piano.
And Kaoru said all the right things really to undo the things that Stiles had enraged her about. And yeah while Kaoru maybe had more knowledge and slightly more power than anyone in their little group-- what it comes down to is the game was the root of things. The game caused all of this. So it's not really Kaoru's fault so when she frames it like that she can let things go and understand things better.
Kaoru really needs to start up his piano lessons again anyways, what a mess that kid is. God. Blaming the keys... give her a break. MOVE YOUR BRATWURST FINGERS.
And yes she does relish in the fact that when she shouts his name... he flinches ever so vaguely. You remember this Kaoru.

she'd probably laugh at him like how'd that work out /grenade wielding phantom of basilisk wing
she's actually kind of glad they worked it out even if it's just admitting they are both ANGRY AND CONFUSED BUT IT'S NOT REALLY OUR FAULT I GUESS-- otherwise if Austria dies again and ends up in blank state 2 the possessed rot they find in her heart that time will be so much more involved from craven castle drama alone... god...
she likes teaching kaoru piano so that makes her pretty happy really c':

Austria started off liking Glinda just fine except she was just kind of some weirdo who broke out into musical numbers so that was a little off putting. Not unpleasant just a little socially awkward for her. What do you even say to someone singing at dinner-- but Glinda seemed fine. Very beautiful. Well dressed. Pleasant and charming.
And even right up through week four Austria liked Glinda. It was really obvious that Glinda was incredibly hurt by Kougyoku's passing-- regardless of the fact that she was an attempted murderer. But Austria never blamed Kougyoku because it was just really apparent that she tried to kill someone because the game had killed her brother so she was so team Kougyoku. And Austria was actually really sympathetic to her up until... it suddenly became super obvious to her that it couldn't have been the person Glinda was gunning for in the trial; Spain.
Austria wasn't sure what to do initially because she didn't realize the "group" was so "secretive" she was actually the last person in the daisy chain to be filled in on monday night at like 2 in the morning after her date with spain and she was filled in by Spain. But he was a biased source to accept information from so she hadn't decided whether to trust it or not-- she'd wanted to talk to another person in the actual daisy chain first.
So when Bakura reacted in the way she did when she brought it up in trial she became confused. Then further confused when no one in the daisy chain spoke up to confirm what she'd said. It just seemed unfathomable to her that anyone would stay silent about this when it could save someone's life-- the life just happened to be Spain's.
So it was kind of a reality shock to her. Like she could understand everyone not being on the same side because of the incentives and that anyone could kill another person any week-- but it hadn't occurred to her that people not involved in the crime that week wouldn't be doing everything in their power to find the truth and prevent another week two from occurring.
So when Austria eventually got her confession out of Bakura and Glinda was upset she was kind of surprised why Glinda had decided to blame her for the secrets of the "group" not being shared earlier when she was the one who spilled them when she thought it counted most-- saving someone's life. Austria barely even considered herself part of the daisy chain because she hadn't really offered anything towards it Spain just dumped it all on her after her date.
But she couldn't say those things without being like "well it wasn't my fault sebastian and kaoru are the one's who knew more than me since before monday and wouldn't say anything even when I prompted them-- but she couldn't do that without outing them so she just sort of absorbed the blame herself because she could deal with a little resentment. it was fine!!
so she tried to get the point across to glinda that you can't trust people in this house to save you because apparently there are shitheads like sebastian and kaoru who only care about themselves even in trials where the information they have can be used to save the life of someone else AND BOY DID THAT BACK FIRE IN HER FACE SPECTACULARLY. glinda just went straight for her throat and actually totally obliterated austria internally. it was way more resentment than she bargained for and no one stood up for her aside from Maribelle pulling glinda off-- so austria went full ice princess at that point and then totally broke down into tears once she got to her bedroom and was basically at her lowest point of that game thus far.
THEN THEY WERE RIVALS except austria never actually hated glinda it was just glinda really hurt her feelings over something she got tied up in so she was bitter about it. she didn't want anything to happen to glinda but she certainly didn't want to interact with her anymore!!
When glinda listened to her about not not voting though she felt like she'd made some progress with her again. And it wa apparent to her even despite seabastian's report that glinda had caught on to things in the house. if sebastian hadn't made his report austria was going to try talking to her about what she'd found out because glinda seemed to have a similar sympathetic view to herself about what was happening-- but then everything went to hell in a hand basket really quickly after that report.
AND AUSTRIA MURDERED SPAIN-- and basically forfeit all her positive relationships at that point. Because everyone loved Spain and she knew she'd never be forgiven for this really. And to be honest she didn't want to be forgiven for it it was just something she felt she had to do to spare Maribelle and get the museum open.
She already knew that Glinda was the kind of person who would never react well to something like this, but during the trial she just so badly wanted to tell Glinda this isn't love. What Spain did to me isn't love. This isn't something you should idolize or want. You can have so much better than this. But she couldn't without revealing what Spain did to her so she just kind of watched this train wreck of Glinda crying over the loss of their relationship in her trial and waited for her ultimate villianess reveal. She just wanted Glinda to live and get home so it would be okay if Glinda didn't understand or hated her again.
NOW THAT SHE IS ALIVE Austria doesn't really know how to talk to a lot of people and Glinda is one of those people. She doesn't feel like she can approach her and Glinda doesn't have any reason to approach herself so. She's just sort of accepted things as they are and doesn't want to do anything to upset the boat. She'll clap for her song still though...
I'M ACTUALLY REALLY SAD ABOUT GLINDA AND AUSTRIA.

I really liked the explanation you gave on Plurk about everything that led up to that moment and it totally makes sense but Glinda will never really understand and Austria probably won't ever feel like explaining it, aha... Spain might have explained it but now he's lost his memories of it, too, unless he wants to do like a, 'wait don't be mad at austria!!' thing before he does.
Glinda can be pretty thoughtless all in all so the way she dealt with all of this was definitely not her best. She tends to do or say awful things and then just assume it can be fixed easily like when she hugged Austria she honestly was thinking they would be 100% fine after the trial after they made up because that's just how things work in her head.
But she's pretty sure this can't be hugged out anymore.
no subject
but she would never be the person to bring it up because she feels like since she killed spain she at least owes him his reputation because he was really so loved. SO LOVED.
and she herself was never all that popular in her opinon or at the very least she was an incredibly difficult person to like so out of the two of them she'd rather be the villain to spare him.
I think spain gets his memories back after a couple hours in camp tho so MAYBE.
AUSTRIA REALLY WANTED THAT HUG TO WORK OUT but she knew it was never gonna be... oh we're finally not rivals anymore and it's not even going to matter after what i just did... /INTENSE HEART ACHE
suffering. what terrible suffering.

Okay well her first impression of him was that he was a terrible conversationalist. Awful. But in a weird way she found his honesty and lack of sugarcoating things vaguely refreshing?? But he was still terrible to try and hold a conversation with so she tried to ollie out of that one as politely as possible. Like god you could try to work with her a little bit here sir.
Also he disliked sweets, which he is certainly allowed to but really to her that's like. What the hell. How were you raised that even your taste buds are devoid of experiencing joy?? Plus the fact that he wasn't eating period and was covered in bandages gave her the impression that he doesn't do a very good job taking care of himself.... which was pretty concerning-- and she did not appreciate being lumped in with the psycho nation boys at all. So basically their entire conversation was an awkward faux pas as far as she was concerned but at least he wasn't spitting up wine on the table like Wriggle was so he wasn't the WORST behaved person there.
During the first trial she found his technique of PICK THE PERSON YOU LIKE LEAST AND WORK FROM THERE pretty awful?? Especially for a lawyer. A DEFENSE LAWYER-- In the end though she ended up doing just that-- voting for Marlowe because she liked her the least out of the choices. THE IRONY.
Before that she was gunning for Kaoru hardcore she just couldn't find the decisive evidence to nail him to the wall.
Her impression of him pretty much plummeted. But at least Klavier was pretty sexist so she just had a bad impression of all the dude lawyers in general. And then in week two Klavier was a moron and a sexist jerk and accusing her of murder so Apollo ranked just vaguely higher than him.
But she felt pretty rotten at how uncooperative she'd been and detrimental to Ian's survival in general in that trial so when Apollo was like EVERYONE GETS A BABYSITTER she relented out of just feeling really bad. She thought the whole thing was a stupid idea to be perfectly honest-- and she couldn't stand him staring at the balconies.
In week four she felt pretty frustrated that she was having such a hard time getting Apollo to see her point after he accused Spain but she felt pretty burdened by other people wanting to keep their identities in this weird daisy chain she got thrusted into last second a secret and not sharing information so she was trying to bulldoze Spain to safety with her hands tied behind her back when she was the least informed person driving really SO SHE DIDN'T REALLY CARE FOR THE CRITIQUE--
--but more important than that she was insulted that just because she was trying to help Spain that made them INVOLVED AND IN LOVE or something so she flipped out on him about that. Because she felt like Spain was sort of yanking her chain a bit romantically so she was like... god no. Shut up Apollo don't give people that impression how dare you!!
But then she was right in the end and she relished in her victory for like three seconds before Glinda ripped her to shreds internally so any admiration Apollo might have been exhibiting towards her bad ass confession cracking abilities went completely undetected and she completely shut down pretty much.
THEN EVENTUALLY THE BOMB WEEK HAPPENED. And you know if Apollo had an actual firm idea of what he was going to use his bomb for that would have been one thing... but just keeping a bomb around because he was given it was just so utterly ridiculous Austria couldn't help but smack him upside the head for it. So he got a wonderful tirade for his trouble and all he got out of it was BLOW UP THE SMOKING ROOM. Which she was really super cool with as long as it was done safely. She got a little bitter that Apollo got credit for what was her idea but at the same time she was like... well. Blowing up stuff is dangerous... so. He can do it. Her opinion of him went up exponentially for taking her advice!!
But then he totally messed up with Feferi tho there was no redeeming him chasing a thirteen year old out a window.
By then Austria was pretty much on the same page as Sebastian she was just letting her own personal biases dictate who could be the killers/mastermind and purposefully ignoring certain details because then it would be more difficult to hate this certain group if Kazoo and Nanami were involved!! At least Chizuru was a grown adult-- Feferi not retiring though made her think that there was something weird going on though.
She completely lost all the respect she had for him in Rin's trial though with his robot racism. She didn't disagree that Rin killing Chihiro was wrong and that she was going to have to be executed but to her it felt like he was more concerned with punishing people after were driven to murder-- as opposed to stopping the true reason people were killing: the producers and the game. Like what Rin did was clearly WRONG but they did everything in their power to drive someone who would be perfectly happy never killing to murder and to her that was something she felt like he was completely ignoring in favor of nailing her.
Apollo's view of human life compared to other forms got her thinking about what a nation life was worth-- by then she'd started to realize at the very least she wasn't human-- and when she started to think about it she realized... nation lives aren't worth anything at all are they. So she began to resent herself for lasting this long when people who mattered were dying. Even Rin as a robot had more value to her than she herself did so the fact that Rin was going to die and they couldn't save Lin just tore her to pieces-- she'd of scapegoated herself then if she'd of been a suspect.
Then Athena and Klavier started in on suicide not voting and she was like. The game has to end and it has to end now. There has to be something someone can do to break things or else more people who are actually worth something are going to keep killing and getting killed and people like Apollo were just going to perpetuate things in the name of some weird form of warped justice until the game came to it's natural end.
SO SHE WAS NOT SURPRISED WHEN APOLLO ALIGNED HIMSELF WITH SEBASTIAN. She was also not surprised at the idea of a no kill week. She thought it was a complete disconnect from reality outing this group though and then expecting none of them to murder. It was pretty apparent to her that they were being coerced somehow and they didn't have a choice in the matter. And when no one offered any ideas to help them Austria was pretty resigned to the fact that if she wanted them to survive another week-- or at the very least protect Maribelle-- she could kill Spain... it wasn't as if nations had any real value alive.
She thought if she could take Sebastian out with her then that would be good too since he'd lived a billion years and therefore didn't count as a human being anyways-- but either way if she died it wouldn't matter based on Apollo's logic. It'd just be an irrelevant week life wise.
AFTER SHE WAS DEAD and the museum was opened she actually thought that might be something eye opening for Apollo??? Like hey look you're a killer too. We're all killers. Except it's not really anyone's fault if you really look at it. It's the game! IT'S THE GAME. Stop the game!!!
But somehow she was not the slightest bit surprised that somehow went straight over his head and he was threatening the DK's and Nanami. Because when it comes down to it Apollo is and will always be kind of an idiot. /FACE PALMING FOREVER
He did shoot Sebastian in the ass though. And for that she can't ever think poorly of him because it was such a wonderful moment. She didn't even hate Sebastian at that point anymore but it was just so great to watch--THANK YOU SO MUCH.
So. Apollo is probably another person she is avoiding indefinitely...
But her opinion on Apollo can never really stay neutral for long.

Poor austria tho SORRY HE HAS...NO GRASP OF TACT and just completely detached himself from the nations (had folks not friendshipped him, he was gonna offer a murder plot for iceland. He knows that they are people, but still feels less disturbed when something happens to them WHICH IS HORRIBLE.) i had no idea she started musing on that even more because of him. OOPS....
no subject
NO APOLLO!!! BUT ICELAND WAS DIFFERENT in that he acted like a teenage kid so she had a different mentality towards him than she did with Spain at least even though she recognized them both as nations (also iceland didn't resent being a nation like spain seemed to so to her iceland was kind of an outlier)
SO IF YOU KILLED ICELAND SHE WOULD HAVE BEEN SO OUTRAGEOUSLY FURIOUS APOLLO YOU MONSTER
she'd think it's so hypocritical that he is okay with killing nations but lets the demon who is going to devour someone when he gets home skate by GOSH APOLLO lmfao
She can't really blame Apollo for being Apollo tho. plus it's not like what she did wasn't awful or anything. \o/
